Purpose

Studies and experience have shown that children enjoy far better outcomes when their fathers are constructively engaged in raising, nurturing and supporting them. When a father is present in the life of his child, that child is far more likely to experience success in life including graduating from high school, delaying sexual activity, and experiencing economic stability.

Father absence is a national crisis with costly implications for our children.  According to Ohio Department of Health statistics, in 2009  forty-four percent (44%) of the children born in Ohio were born to non-married mothers.  Being raised in “mothers only” households is one of the leading indicators of poverty.

The Ohio Commission on Fatherhood is embarking upon a new approach in advocating for responsible fatherhood and becoming a valuable resource to families. The Ohio Commission on Fatherhood funds fatherhood programs throughout the state, makes policy recommendations regarding fathers, engages the community and train professionals. This framework allows the Commission to strategically promote father engagement at all levels.
